A framework for parameter estimation using sharp-interface seawater intrusion models

چکیده
Sharp-interface seawater intrusion models present shorter run times than variable density codes, which makes them practical for regional, decision-support groundwater modeling. Although parameter estimation and uncertainty analyses are essential steps model-based decision making, their implementation in has remained limited. Few guidelines available it is unclear observations should be used, what processing they require weighting strategy used. A framework been developed using a regional sharp-interface model applied to real-world example the Magdalen Islands (Quebec, Canada). This included assimilation of head collected from shallow wells, deep open wells pumping as well freshwater-seawater interface derived TDEM (time-domain electromagnetic) ERT (electrical resistivity tomography) geophysical surveys. was MODFLOW-SWI2 fast allowed numerous parameters, including heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity field with pilot points. Following PEST, several forecasts, i.e. volume freshwater elevation near municipal examined first-order second moment (FOSM) approach data worth analysis carried out. While presented low signal-to-noise ratio, effective reduce forecasts. Interface observations, particularly were most useful predictive uncertainties. Head biased could not suitably reproduced by model. The here relatively straightforward implemented more systematically. study also provides recommendations guide future collection strategies coastal aquifers.

A Bayesian Framework for Parameter Estimation in Dynamical Models
Mathematical models in biology are powerful tools for the study and exploration of complex dynamics. Nevertheless, bringing theoretical results to an agreement with experimental observations involves acknowledging a great deal of uncertainty intrinsic to our theoretical representation of a real system. Proper handling of such uncertainties is key to the successful usage of models to predict exp...

متن کاملDerivation of a Sharp-Diffuse Interfaces Model for Seawater Intrusion in a Free Aquifer. Numerical Simulations
We derive a new model for seawater intrusion phenomena in free aquifers. It combines the efficiency of the sharp interface approach with the physical realism of the diffuse interface one. More precisely, a phase field is used as an intermediate variable for including the exchanges between the characteristic layers of the aquifer (salt water, fresh water, unsaturated zone). The threedimensional ...
متن کاملFormal derivation of seawater intrusion models
In this paper, we consider the flow of fresh and saltwater in a saturated porous medium in order to describe the seawater intrusion. Starting from a formulation with constant densities respectively of fresh and of saltwater, whose velocity is proportional to the gradient of pressure (Darcy’s law), we consider the formal asymptotic shallow water limit as the ratio between the thickness and the h...
